Live in The Wise Lounge,
Gillian Moranz & Nasti Weather
Gillian Moranz is a Vancouver-based singer/songwriter heavily influenced by wordsmiths such as Mary Gauthier, Townes Van Zandt, John Prine, Gillian Welche, and Leonard Cohen. Her parents were two founding members of a small community-oriented music festival in Fort Macleod, AB, and she was raised within a festival community that was created and driven by the perpetuation of traditional and contemporary culture and artistic expression. This has been a major element that has driven her relentless hunger for music and art but also has greatly influenced her own means of creative expression. The wisdom and insight of Gillian’s songs blend seamlessly with her unique and original sounding voice and her dynamic stories showcase a folk sensibility with an undeniably contemporary twist. Regardless of the context, Moranz always strives to leave her audiences feeling as though they have witnessed something dynamic, compelling, thought-provoking, and profound.
Imaginatively described as fallen gospel gutter folk, Nasti Weather is the creation of East Vancouver’s Anastasia Schlechtleitner. With her haunting, powerful voice the young songstress crafts bluesy folk tales that cast a light on the darkness inside each of us, carrying raw catharsis and a white flag you can wave to yourself.
Vocally, Ana acknowledges being greatly inspired by classic jazz. Billie Holiday’s voice is a helpful reference when describing Ana’s voice, but there is a roughness and rawness in her performance that points to a deep love of punk and garage rock. She’s deftly capable of drawing audiences close with a gentle croon, but don’t be shocked if you’re blown back by an underbelly howl.
